Skip Hire Checklist: How to Prepare for Skip Delivery

You’ve booked the skip, cleared the waste, and planned the project. Then the delivery lorry arrives and cannot reach the agreed spot. A narrow entrance, parked car, low branch, or unsuitable ground can turn a simple skip delivery into a frustrating delay.

One 2026 analysis of skip deliveries found that 23% of initial drop-offs failed because of preventable access problems. Some skip providers may also charge for failed delivery attempts when access is blocked or unsuitable, adding an unexpected cost to your project.

The good news is that a little preparation clears nearly all of these problems in advance. So, what should you check before your skip arrives to ensure a smooth delivery?

1. Confirm Your Skip Hire Booking and Delivery Details

Worker discusses skip collection with a customer beside a Horrocks Waste truck.

Start with the confirmation. When you book skip online, the details you enter become the driver’s instructions, and any mistake is much easier to fix now than on the morning of delivery.

Check the following, and confirm the delivery and collection dates alongside the delivery time window:

  • Delivery date and the expected time window, typically 7 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday
  • Delivery address and postcode, as service options may be subject to your location
  • Skip size
  • Waste type
  • The agreed placement position
  • Private property or public road placement
  • A contact number that will be answered on the day
  • Access instructions such as gates, entry codes, narrow entrances or shared driveways

Tell the team if anything has changed since you booked. A kitchen strip-out that becomes a full house clearance, or a garden job that now includes broken slabs and subsoil, changes the container’s weight and sometimes the size you need. Dense materials matter here in particular, as a skip carrying soil, rubble or concrete can reach its safe load long before it looks full. Heavy loads of this kind usually belong in a 4 yard residential skip, while mixed renovation waste tends to suit an 8 yard residential skip. Standard size skip options also commonly include 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 14 yards, depending on availability.

Short lead times leave less room for corrections. With same day skip delivery, the preparation window may be a matter of hours, and delivery can often happen within a few hours if ordered early in the day, so walk the route and clear it as soon as the booking is confirmed. Next day skip delivery is available in many UK postcodes and gives you an evening to move vehicles and unlock gates, which is usually enough time if no permit is involved.

What should I check before my skip is delivered?

Confirm the delivery date, address and postcode, skip size, waste type and agreed placement position. Check that the contact number on the booking will be answered on the day, and share any access details such as gate codes, narrow entrances, or shared driveways. Report changes to your waste before delivery.

2. Prepare the Skip Placement Area and Delivery Route

The placement area and the route to it are separate checks, and any skip delivery service will consider both. A driveway can be perfectly suitable while the approach to it is not.

Ground and position. Choose firm, reasonably level ground with enough room for the container and for the lorry to work around it. Keep the position clear of drains, manholes, inspection covers and any surface that has been laid recently. Garages, doors and shared access routes should stay usable while the skip is in place. Block paving, resin, decorative paving and tarmac can mark or crack under a heavy vehicle and a loaded container, so raise this before delivery if the surface concerns you. Fragile surfaces can often be protected with plywood or wooden planks.

The route. Walk it from the road to the placement point and look for anything a lorry would struggle with. Skip lorries typically need about 3 metres of width for access, especially where the approach crosses a road or path:

  • Parked cars, bins, bikes, planters and stacked building materials
  • Gates that need unlocking, and gates that do not open fully
  • Narrow roads, tight bends and restricted entrances
  • Low branches, balconies, height barriers and overhead cables

Report low branches and cables rather than dealing with them yourself. If an entrance looks tight or there is limited access, send photos, measurements and the exact location in advance so we can check access before the lorry sets off. On constrained trade sites, a 4 yard commercial skip is sometimes the only container that can be placed and collected safely. Keep children and pets well away while the container is being unloaded. The driver makes the final decision on safe placement, based on the conditions in front of them when they arrive.

How much space is needed for skip delivery?

More space than the skip itself. The lorry needs room to approach, lower the container, and reverse or drive away, along with height clearance above the loading area. Requirements vary by skip size and vehicle, so describe your access when booking and ask what your chosen size needs.

3. Check Skip Permits and Local Access Rules

Permits are simpler than they first appear, and the answer depends almost entirely on where the container sits.

A skip placed wholly on private land, such as your own driveway or garden, normally needs no council permit. A skip on a public road or verge usually requires a skip hire permit from the local council. Skips are not placed on the road or path unless the necessary permits are in place before delivery.

A few other points are worth knowing:

  • Parking suspensions and dispensations are applied for separately from the permit itself, and are often needed for controlled bays, yellow lines and restricted streets.
  • Councils set their own rules, fees, durations and processing times, and charges vary depending on the local council and location, so allow working days rather than hours.
  • Many authorities require lights, cones or reflective markings on a skip left on the highway.
  • A permit covers the public highway only. It gives no right to block a neighbour’s access or a private parking space, and neighbour goodwill is no substitute for the permit.

For road placements, the right skip is usually no larger than 8 yards.

The same rules apply to trade bookings, so build permit lead times into any commercial skip hire arranged around a site programme. Same day skip delivery and next day skip delivery are realistic on private land, but a road placement cannot go ahead until prices and timing remain subject to permit approval from the local council. If your permit is still pending, or the planned position has moved from private land onto the road, tell us before the delivery window opens so we can adjust the slot rather than waste it.

Do I need a permit for a skip?

Skips placed on a public road, verge or other public land generally require permission from the relevant local authority. Skips placed entirely on suitable private land, such as a driveway, normally do not. Councils set their own fees and processing times, so apply well ahead of your delivery date.

4. Prepare and Sort Your Waste and Choose the Right Skip Size Before the Skip Arrives

Sorting waste in advance speeds up loading, but where you stack it matters just as much. Keep prepared waste away from the placement position and clear of the lorry route, and wait until the container has been set down before you start loading it.

Some materials cannot go in a general skip and need a separate arrangement. Check the restricted list shown when you book skip online, and set the following aside:

  • Asbestos
  • Chemicals and oils
  • Gas cylinders
  • Batteries
  • Tyres
  • Electrical appliances, fridges and freezers
  • Liquid paint
  • Medical waste

Plasterboard, mattresses and upholstered furniture usually need declaring as well, since they are handled separately and may carry an additional charge.

Volume is the other half of the calculation. Bulky household items such as furniture, carpet and packaging fill space quickly without adding much weight, which is where a 10 yard residential skip earns its keep. Trade clearances producing high volumes of light waste, such as a shop or office strip-out, are better matched to a 16 yard commercial skip.

When loading begins, put heavy and flat items in first and spread the weight across the base rather than piling it into one corner. Break down bulky items where you can safely, as a dismantled wardrobe takes up a fraction of the space. Keep everything level with the top edge, because an overfilled container is unsafe to transport and the collection team can refuse it.

What can you put in a skip?

A standard skip accepts general household, garden waste, renovation materials, and construction debris, but not hazardous or specialist items. Accepted materials vary between providers and sites, so check the restricted waste list before you load, and declare heavy materials such as soil, rubble and concrete when booking.

5. Get Ready for Skip Delivery and Collection Day

Worker prepares a yellow skip for collection outside a suburban home.

Knowing how to prepare for skip delivery counts for little if you don’t keep the area clear on the day itself. Exact arrival times cannot be guaranteed, as traffic, weather and access conditions on earlier jobs all have an effect, so treat the full window as the slot rather than the hour you expect; the usual delivery time falls within standard operating hours, typically 7 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday.

On delivery day:

  • Keep the placement position and the lorry route free for the whole window
  • Stay reachable on the number listed against the booking
  • Confirm unattended delivery in advance if nobody will be on site
  • The customer should be there if a gate needs opening, access is shared or tight, or limited access could affect placement
  • Follow the driver’s instructions once the lorry is manoeuvring
  • Keep people and pets clear of the working area
  • Give neighbours notice if a shared drive or narrow street will be briefly restricted

Collection needs the same preparation as delivery. A skip delivery service requires the same clearance on the way out as it did on the way in, and access often changes over the course of a job. Where an 8 yard commercial skip has sat on a working site for weeks, the approach that worked on day one is rarely the approach you have by the end.

Before collection day:

  • Move vehicles and any obstacles that have appeared since the drop
  • Check that gates and turning space are still usable after weeks of building work
  • Plan the timeline so the container is not standing half-filled
  • Arrange an extra collection, or a 10 yard commercial skip as a replacement, if the job is running on, and keep confirmed delivery and collection dates in step with the site programme

Give Your Skip Delivery the Best Chance of Going Right

Failed deliveries are rarely caused by a site that cannot take a skip. They are caused by a site the driver was told nothing about. Every detail you pass on when you book skip online widens the options open to us, and by the morning of the drop, the only choice left is to place the container or drive away. Treat the booking as a conversation rather than a form, though the website is still useful for an instant quote before you speak to the team, and same day skip delivery becomes a realistic plan instead of a gamble.

We’re happy to have that conversation. Horrocks Waste Management supplies domestic and trade skips across Greater Manchester, and our team will talk through access, sizing and permits before anything is booked in. Tell us about the gates, the bends and the ground, and we will tell you what fits.

Skip hire prices and prices vary by skip size, location and permits, with no hidden costs or hidden fees. We support domestic customers, business users and commercial customers. We also aim to offer competitive prices, value for money and complete support. Visit Horrocks Waste Management to book your skip, or contact our friendly team on 01204 843372 for fantastic customer service and fast hire delivery or waste removal support if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions for Skip Hire Checklist

Can you deliver a skip to a tight or awkward driveway?

In many cases, yes. We need firm, reasonably level ground, room for the lorry to approach, lower the container and pull away, and clear height above the loading area, and these access requirements depend on the exact location; skips should not obstruct a public path. Flag narrow entrances, tight bends, and overhead cables when you book, and send photos or measurements so we can check access before the lorry sets off. The driver makes the final call on the day. Even with an awkward driveway, choosing the right skip size still depends on the available access. If access is restricted, our 4 yard skip is the easiest size to fit onto a narrow driveway.

Do you handle trade skip delivery as well as household waste?

We do. Our skip delivery service covers home renovations, garden clearances and house moves alongside construction and fit-out work for household jobs and business needs. The checks are the same either way: we assess access, ground conditions, placement, and permits before delivery, and we match the size to the waste rather than the job, since a small load of rubble and a large load of packaging need very different containers; commercial customers may also need advice on waste disposal for ongoing site work. We also aim for environmentally friendly handling to reduce landfill and recycle as much waste as possible. For site programmes and repeat collections, our commercial skip hire range is built around trade schedules.

How quickly can you get a skip to us?

Same day skip delivery and same day delivery are often possible on private land when a slot is free, and the placement area is already clear. Next day skip delivery is the usual turnaround for bookings placed during the working day, depending on postcode availability. Some providers offer same-day skip hire across London and nearby areas, but service remains subject to location and slot availability. Road placements are the exception, as the container cannot go down until council permission is in place. At short notice, an accurate waste type and a clear route matter more than anything. If you need a skip quickly, contact our team on 01204 843372 to decide fast based on current availability.

How long can you leave the skip with us?

Hire periods are set when you book and are built around the job rather than a fixed rule, so a weekend garden clearance and a multi-week renovation are handled differently. A skip on the public highway is the tighter case, as the container can only stay for as long as the council permit allows, while a skip on your own driveway gives you more room to move. Let us know before the collection date if the work is running behind. If you need longer, our skip hire team can arrange an extension or a replacement container.
