Where can you put a skip? | Horrocks Blog

If you have a project that needs a skip, you might be wondering where you can put it. The last thing you want is to pay for a skip, then find you get a fine or have it removed because it’s in the wrong place or because you haven’t got a licence. There are some restrictions about where you can put them and you need to get the right permissions, but if you hire a skip from us, we will do all the hard work for you. Here is a guide to what you might need to consider.

  1. Where can I put a skip?

If you have space for your skip on your own private land you will not need a skip permit. However there are regulations that need to be followed in terms of locating a skip if you intend to place it on or near a public road. You can’t put a skip on the pavement, but you can put it on a public road if you get a licence, but it can’t cause any obstructions or access issues for others. If the skip will be sited in a carpark or restricted parking area you may also need to apply for a parking bay restriction through your local council. Our skips come in all different sizes so we can help you find the right size skip for the space you have available and the job you need it for. As a rough guide, think of a skip as the size of a parked car.

We can also deliver skips into your garden provided there is sufficient access. The skip will also need to be placed on a solid surface as even empty skips are extremely heavy.

The Highways Act sets this out in detail, but we can give you advice about where best to place your skip if you hire one from us.

2. How do I get a licence?

Firstly,  you have to contact your local council for a skip licence if you want to put a skip on a public road. This is usually an online application, but if you hire a skip from us, we do this for you to save you any hassle.

3. Is there anything else I need to know?

You may need to put safety lights and markings on or around the skip. This could include:

  • reflective markings
  • traffic cones
  • night-time safety lamps
  • the name and telephone number of the skip hire company

If you don’t put up the required safety lights and markings, you could be fined up to £1,000. But don’t worry – we will contact your local council to find exact rules for lights and markings in your area.

If you follow this basic guidance, you will be able to have your skip in place and in use without any worries. If you want us to do all this admin for you, get in touch.
